The Mother City’s top young scientists demonstrated their talent and innovation at the Eskom Expo Cape Town Regional Science Fair, presenting research projects that highlight a promising future in science and technology.
The regional science fair held at University of Cape Town (UCT), Sports Centre on 19 and 20 August featured 223 projects showcased by 332 young scientists in Grades 4–12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) NC(V) Level 2 to NC(V) Level 4 students. These learners progressed in their Expo journeys after taking part in various activities throughout the year, including workshops and District Expos.
The most popular category at this year’s fair was Social Sciences, with 44 entries, followed by strong participation in Engineering (35), Biomedical and medical sciences (27) and Chemistry and Biochemistry (26).
Eskom Expo Cape Town’s Regional Science Fair Director, Thomas Mtontsi commended the learners for their curiosity, creativity and determination in presenting innovative projects that reflect the future of science and technology in Cape Town.
“Gratitude goes to the teachers and mentors for their guidance, to the judges for their expertise and dedication, and to the sponsors and exhibitors for making the platform possible. Eskom Expo is more than a competition, it is a celebration of potential, a platform for opportunities, and a vital investment in developing a generation of young scientists who will find solutions to our country’s problems,” he said.
During the awards ceremony, learners were recognised for excellence in research and innovation. A total of 31 Gold medals, 77 Silver medals, and 68 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards from Eskom. The award recipients, who received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by Eskom, are as follows:
- Best Female: Layla Moolla, a Grade 10 learner at Star College Cape Town High School, “Affix signed stickers after interviews”
- Best Innovation: Cole Awood and Zeeshan Sykes, Grade 11 learners at Pinelands High School, “WildLens – Tackling wildlife poaching”
- Best Energy Project: Mahmood Parker and Hermanus Bosman, Grade 11 learners at Pinelands High School, “Friendly Fire: An eco-friendly alternative to paraffin-wax firelighters”
- Best Development Project: Olwethu Bonxo, a Grade 12 learner at Centre of Science and Technology, “Antiseptic effectiveness uncovered: A comparative analysis on bacterial suppression”
The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “Through the Eskom Expo, learners are exposed to real-world scientific research, innovation challenges, and opportunities for personal growth. They learn how to design experiments, solve problems, communicate their findings, and think critically. These are skills that are essential in both academic and career contexts. Many of our past participants have gone on to study engineering, physics, computer science, and related disciplines, with some even representing South Africa in global science competitions. The Expo acts as an early catalyst for learners to imagine themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators. It creates the spark, and then helps nurture that spark into a career.”
Other prizes were awarded for exceptional efforts and creativity in various categories:
- Best Environmental Sciences (Junior): Nathier Allie and Zaydaan Sonday from Star College Bridgetown
- Best Environmental Sciences (Senior): Aisha Sivak and Jenna de Bruyn from Pinelands High School
- Best Biomedical Project (Grades 10–12): Nina TerMorshuizen from Pinelands High School
- Best Chemistry-Related Project (Primary): Nour Osman Alkholy from Star College Cape Town Primary School
- Best Chemistry-Related Project (Junior): Muhammad Ismail Rajabally from International School of Cape Town High School), along with Shayla Goott and Leah Roytowski from Herzlia High School
- Best Chemistry-Related Project (Senior): Zayn Redelinghuys from Parklands College
- Best in Computer Sciences Category (Senior, Grades 10–12): Alea du Toit from Curro Durbanville
- SAEON Award (any grade): Oliver Vintin and Ludwig Richards from Hout Bay International School
Additionally, the Mayor’s Choice Awards, presented by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis were awarded to Madison Coleman and Lyla Crighton from Parklands College; Yondela Balintulo from Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT); and Lutho Mpongwana and Ropafadza Nyandoro from Groote Schuur High School. The learners received a trophy and a cash prize.
Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said the regional science fair forms a vital part of South Africa’s broader strategy to invest in skills development and strengthen education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI) at the school level.
“It offers a dynamic platform for young, aspiring scientists to present their innovative ideas and research projects, gaining valuable experience and exposure to future careers in scientific and technological fields. Importantly, it also promotes inclusivity by encouraging participation from learners in previously disadvantaged communities and empowering young girls to pursue STEM-related studies. The creativity, passion, and problem-solving skills on display from these learners highlight the remarkable potential of our youth and signal a bright future for innovation in the country. Congratulations to all the medal winners, and best wishes as they prepare to compete at the upcoming prestigious Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF),” said Chetty.
