Join Us Live: The International Science Fair (ISF)

What is ISF? The International Science Fair (ISF) is Africa’s largest platform for young innovators and scientists to present their groundbreaking research in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI). It is a celebration of curiosity, ingenuity, and collaboration among learners who strive to solve real-world problems through scientific inquiry and exploration.

What is ISF?

The International Science Fair (ISF) is the premier science competition on the African continent, providing a platform for learners from across Africa and beyond to showcase their innovative ideas and research. With a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI), the ISF empowers young minds to engage in meaningful scientific inquiry, turning their curiosity into groundbreaking research that addresses real-world challenges.

At its core, ISF is a celebration of discovery, where learners are encouraged to think critically, explore innovative solutions, and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. Participants work on projects that span a wide range of categories, including environmental science, energy, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering, among others. These young scientists not only contribute to the advancement of their fields but also gain invaluable skills in research, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

The fair also fosters collaboration, with participants connecting with peers, mentors, and industry experts from various countries. Through this exchange of ideas, learners are exposed to diverse perspectives and global challenges, encouraging a broader understanding of the impact of their work.

In addition to showcasing their projects, ISF participants stand the chance to receive recognition on both national and international stages, with opportunities to present at global science fairs, earn scholarships, and secure research funding. For many, the ISF serves as a launchpad for future careers in STEM fields, contributing to the development of the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Why Participate in ISF?

The fair is much more than a competition. Participants develop a wide range of skills that go beyond conducting experiments. By joining the ISF, learners get the chance to:

  • Build strong research skills by conducting and presenting original projects.
  • Network with fellow young scientists, experts, and professionals in STEM fields.
  • Stay informed on the latest technological advancements and research trends.
  • Improve communication and presentation skills by articulating their findings to a broader audience.
  • Compete for prestigious awards and global recognition, including bursaries, cash prizes, and opportunities for international exposure.

2023 Highlights

The 2023 International Science Fair (ISF) was a remarkable event, bringing together 330 young scientists from across South Africa and 20 international participants from countries such as Ghana, India, Türkiye, and more. This year’s fair demonstrated the diversity of scientific research, with projects spanning various disciplines, from agriculture and environmental studies to cutting-edge innovations in technology and health sciences.

Each project presented at the ISF embodied the spirit of innovation and scientific inquiry, with young minds tackling real-world challenges, whether related to food security, renewable energy, or environmental sustainability. The event served as a melting pot of ideas, where local and international participants exchanged knowledge, learned from one another, and gained exposure to different research methodologies.

Participants who performed exceptionally well during the fair not only earned awards and recognition but also qualified to represent their work on international platforms. Winners have previously gone on to attend prestigious global science events, gain scholarships for further education, and collaborate with top scientists from around the world. The fair remains a key stepping stone for future leaders in science, offering both national pride and global recognition for their contributions.

The success of ISF 2023 highlights the growing importance of fostering young talent in the fields of STEMI, and its legacy will continue to inspire future participants.
