Grade 10 Limpopo young scientist turns a simple idea into award-winning research

What began as a simple idea became award-winning research for Neo Chuene, a Grade 10 learner whose first steps at the Eskom Expo led to recognition at the 46th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF).

Chuene, from Capricorn High School, represented the Capricorn Region in Limpopo and received a Silver medal and the Wits School of Human and Community Development Award, which included a tablet computer valued at R8 000.

“Winning awards at ISF felt unreal,” Chuene said. “Initially, I couldn’t believe that my simple idea was able to develop into research that judges from across the country felt the need to reward.”

Being recognised by a university was particularly meaningful to the young scientist. “Being awarded by a university also felt special, as it demonstrated to me that I have good potential to think above the average Grade 10 learner,” Chuene said.

The opportunities offered through Eskom Expo initially attracted Chuene to the programme. The prospect of presenting research to professionals on an international platform was both intimidating and exciting. “It felt intimidating and challenging. This was a challenge that I knew I was ready for,” Chuene said.

After registering with a teacher, Chuene began preparing a research plan for the District Expo. From there, the project progressed through the Eskom Expo stages and eventually reached ISF.

Among Chuene’s favourite memories were the connections formed with fellow young scientists, presenting and explaining the research to judges and members of the public, and having that hard work recognised through the awards.

The opportunity to communicate the research was particularly important, transforming months of work into conversations with people interested in understanding the project and its potential.

Chuene’s passion for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) has been strongly influenced by family.

“My passion for STEMI came from my parents,” Chuene said. “They were able to nurture my young mind into being focused on problem-solving, curiosity and resourcefulness so that I could excel in my schoolwork.”

Outside STEMI, Chuene enjoys reading, art and spending time outdoors with friends and family.

Having experienced the demands of taking a research project from the District Expo through to ISF, Chuene encourages first-time participants to be realistic about the commitment involved.

“I would advise them to prepare for the amount of work, energy and time that it will actually take them to complete their project,” Chuene said.

Perseverance and having a clear purpose are equally important. “I would also advise them to be perseverant and set goals on what they wish to achieve with their project, so that they can remember why they are doing the project when they feel like giving up.”
