Centurion young innovator takes Gold and multiple honours at Eskom Expo ISF

At just 14 years old, Reinhardt Rossouw has already participated in multiple Eskom Expo science fairs, and his latest journey culminated in a Gold medal and several major awards at the 46th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF).

The Grade 8 learner from Hoërskool Zwartkop in Centurion represented the Northern Gauteng Region and received the Eskom Special Award for Best Innovation Project, which included a high-end laptop and R10 000 cash prize. He was also named the Junior Energy Category winner.

Rossouw additionally received an FFS Refiners Award for innovation in engineering technology. The FFS Refiners Awards recognised outstanding projects across science, engineering, technology, energy and environmental sustainability, with each recipient receiving an iPad.

“Winning was an absolutely incredible feeling. I found it difficult to believe at first. The recognition confirmed that the hard work, dedication and long hours invested in the project had truly paid off. This achievement has strengthened my confidence,” said Rossouw.

His interest in Eskom Expo began with his passion for science and a desire to explore new challenges. His journey started at a small school science expo, where the experience encouraged him to continue developing his research.

By Grade 6, he had progressed to his first Eskom Expo International Science Fair, which he describes as formative and as strengthening his enthusiasm for the programme.

This year, returning to ISF brought both the excitement of competition and the opportunity to connect with the wider community of young scientists. “One of the most memorable aspects of this year’s Eskom Expo International Science Fair was the opportunity to meet so many friendly people,” Rossouw said.

He enjoyed the anticipation surrounding the competition and meeting the judges, as well as the accommodation, food and time spent with the Northern Gauteng team.

“However, the biggest highlight for me was being called onto the stage to receive my awards,” he said.

Rossouw’s passion for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) was strongly influenced by his father, an engineer. His own curiosity and desire to understand how things work have further shaped his ambitions.

“Everywhere I go I see innovation, and I always wanted to become an innovator and entrepreneur, pushing the boundaries of science and engineering,” he said.

That interest in creating and building began early. One of Rossouw’s first hobbies was building model aircraft, which sparked his enthusiasm for hands-on creative and technical projects.

Outside STEMI, he remains active through cricket, tennis and karate and enjoys keeping himself busy and productive.

Having already experienced the Eskom Expo journey from an early age, Rossouw encourages first-time participants to choose research that genuinely interests them. “Choose a project that suits you, as passion makes the research process far more enjoyable and sustainable,” he said. “Start early, plan carefully, and be prepared to revise and improve your work based on feedback.”

He also believes setbacks are an important part of scientific research.

“Do not be discouraged by setbacks. They are a normal and valuable part of the scientific process,” Rossouw said. “Most importantly, enjoy the experience, engage with other participants and view the Expo as an opportunity to learn and grow rather than solely as a competition.”
