Curiosity and a drive to find solutions brought young scientists from across Capricorn together at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair, where they presented research spanning diverse scientific fields and were recognised for outstanding work across various scientific disciplines.
Hosted at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane on 15 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 126 research projects, including group projects, presented by 153 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 43 entries, followed by Biomedical and Medical Sciences (17) and Social Sciences (14).
Eskom Expo’s Limpopo Provincial Coordinator, Tshego Mahuma, said: “The regional event was an exciting opportunity for our young scientists to demonstrate what they had learnt throughout their Eskom Expo journey. We were encouraged by the curiosity, creativity and determination shown by learners as they presented their research and engaged with the judges. Their projects demonstrated the value of giving young people opportunities to investigate the challenges around them and develop their own ideas and solutions. We congratulate every learner who participated and thank our title sponsor, Eskom, for its continued investment in young scientific talent. Our sincere appreciation also goes to our educators, judges, parents, schools, volunteers, committee members and partners whose support contributed to the success of the Regional Science Fair.”
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 17 Gold medals, 52 Silver medals and 39 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:
