Eden Karoo young scientists demonstrate scientific inquiry and innovation at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair

The Eskom Expo Eden Karoo Regional Science Fair brought together the region’s brightest young scientists, who presented innovative research projects demonstrating scientific inquiry, creativity and practical problem-solving.

Hosted at Outeniqua High School in George on 1 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 74 projects presented by 113 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular categories were Engineering and Social Sciences, which attracted 22 entries each, followed by Computer Sciences and Software Development (eight), while Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies attracted five, each.

Eskom Expo’s Western Cape Provincial Coordinator, Lyndon Manas said beyond the awards and recognition, the regional science fair provided a dynamic platform for young scientists to spark curiosity, build meaningful friendships and collaborate with fellow learners, mentors and STEM professionals.

Our heartfelt thanks also go to our dedicated judges, the staff of Outeniqua High School, Regional Science Fair Committee members and support personnel for their tireless efforts in making the event a success. We also acknowledge the invaluable contribution of school principals, Expo teachers, parents and guardians, whose unwavering encouragement empowered these young researchers to pursue their scientific ambitions. We trust this year’s fair will inspire a lifelong passion for discovery and set a benchmark for future Eskom Expo events,” said Manas.

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research, innovation and presentation. A total of 12 Gold medals, eight Silver medals and 28 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom.
