Join Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in celebrating National Science Week (31 July to 5 August) by experiencing an array of exciting and educational activities, including hands-on experiments, captivating science shows, and intriguing presentations.
This year, National Science Week’s theme is “Transforming lives through evidence-based science.” By embracing this theme, young scientists will gain valuable insights into the problem-solving and decision-making processes that rely on evidence-based approaches. Discover how utilising researched and experienced information can shape our responses to various situations.
Eskom Expo has organised numerous activities across South Africa, designed to expose school learners to exciting career opportunities and valuable skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI) industries. Below are the planned activities.
Mpumalanga
01 August 2023: Wesselton Primary School, Ermelo. Morning session 10:00–12:30. Afternoon session 13:00–16:00. Experience an array of exciting and educational activities, including hands-on experiments, captivating science shows, and intriguing presentations.
02 August 2023: Piet Retief Combined School, Piet Retief. Morning session: 10:00–12:30. Afternoon session 13:00–16:00. Experience an array of exciting and educational activities, including hands-on experiments, captivating science shows, and intriguing presentations.
03 August 2023: Mountainview Primary School, Barberton. Morning session: 10:00–12:30. Afternoon session 13:00–16:00. Experience an array of exciting and educational activities, including hands-on experiments, captivating science shows, and intriguing presentations.
04 August 2023: Mpumalanga University Multi-Purpose Hall, Mbombela. Morning session 10:00–12:30. Afternoon session 13:00–16:00. Experience an array of exciting and educational activities, including hands-on experiments, captivating science shows, and intriguing presentations.

Western Cape
31 July 2023: 13:00 at Wesbank Senior Secondary School in Malmesbury. Women in Science: Round-robin dating session (Fact Hunter). Female scientists (in collaboration with South African Women in Science and Engineering (SAWISE), the University of Cape Town, and Stellenbosch University) use this platform to be role models for learners, to excite learners using their field of study, to incite girls with Maths and Sciences at an early age and to encourage them to develop an interest in Science, Mathematics and Technology. Focus on how basic evidence-based science plays a role in the development of specific careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI). Focus on possible careers in renewable energy systems to assist learners to understand their role in the future of sustainable energy provision.
31 July 2023: 11:00 at Beaufort West Youth Hub, Sidesaviwe, Beaufort West. Fun Workshop/Challenge: e.g. Paper Jet, Building Windmills, Coding & Robotics. STEMI Specialists will focus on how basic evidence-based science plays a role in the development of science, e.g. They will explore various aspects, such as experimenting with different windmill shapes and delving into the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI) in wind energy.
02 August 2023: 13:00 at Porterville Primary School, Porterville. Fun Workshop/Challenge: e.g. Paper Jet, Building Windmills, Coding & Robotics. STEMI Specialists will focus on how basic evidence-based science plays a role in the development of science, e.g. They will explore various aspects, such as experimenting with different windmill shapes and delving into the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI) in wind energy.
03 August 2023: 13:00 at Augsburg, Clanwilliam. Fun Workshop/Challenge: e.g. Paper Jet, Building Windmills, Coding & Robotics. STEMI Specialists will focus on how basic evidence-based science plays a role in the development of science, e.g. They will explore various aspects, such as experimenting with different windmill shapes and delving into the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI) in wind energy.
03 August 2023: 14:00 Online-session via Zoom to celebrate the International Year of Millets 2023 through the eyes of a dietician, along with a discussion on STEMI careers for women. Registration information is to be confirmed.

Eastern Cape
31 July 2023: 15:30 to 17:00 Zoom webinar on the ‘Makhanda Electricity Saving Project: Sifunda Ngombane’, which will highlight how little changes to electricity use made in our homes can conserve electricity. The main aim of this webinar is to promote household electricity savings using user-driven, evidence-based and co-designed electricity-saving tips. Rhodes University participants who conducted research will form part of a panel to share their findings. An audience consisting of the general public, researchers, learners and educators is invited to attend the session. To register, click here.
