Young scientists in the Bojanala region had the chance to demonstrate their research skills and scientific aptitude at the regional final of this year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.
A total of 248 budding young scientists in grades 4 to 12, along with TVET college learners (NC2 to NC4), from the region presented 187 research projects at the event, which took place at Fields College in Rustenburg on 25 July 2024. The projects on display were evaluated by 62 judges, which included educators, specialists, academics, and dedicated Eskom Expo supporters.
This year’s participants have been pre-selected after taking part in various Expo activities, including workshops, research and innovations camps, and district expos. During these events, learners received valuable feedback from a team of experts to enhance their research leading up to the regional competitions.
This regional science fair was one of 38 regional science fairs planned in all provinces across South Africa. The most popular categories at the fair were Engineering, Energy, Earth Sciences, Social Sciences and Environmental Sciences.
Eskom Expo’s Bojanala Regional Science Fair Director, Morapedi Bodigelo, said, “The Region is delighted with the turnout of learners from over 40 schools who participated this year. Our champion teachers did a sterling job in ensuring that the learners were well-prepared for the event. A special thank you goes to the local organising committee, our title sponsor Eskom, and the North West Department of Education for their support. Together, we can elevate this region to even greater heights.
The top young scientists were honoured with the prestigious Eskom Special Awards at the region’s awards ceremony. The award recipients, who received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by Eskom, included:
- Best female: Zaakirah Jabbar, Grade 12 at Zinniaville Secondary School
- Best innovation: Surprise Ndlovu, Grade 11 at Boikagong Secondary School
- Best energy project: Onthatile Leso, Grade 11 at Reipuseng Secondary School
- Best development project: Anthonia Shapota and Shaldon Mokotedi, Grade 10 at Tsholofelo Technical High School
The Top Junior Scientist award was presented to Senorita Mohanty, a Grade 7 learner at Zinniaville Primary School; while the Top Senior Scientist award went to Zaakirah Jabbar, a Grade 12 learner at Zinniaville Secondary School. Additionally, a total of 10 highly coveted Gold medals were awarded at the awards ceremony, along with 40 Silver medals and 69 Bronze medals.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said, “We at the Eskom Development Foundation are ecstatic to see that learners are actively taking action to address the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations (UN), which was a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for us all. Regional science fairs not only provide a platform for young scientists to display their scientific ability, but also serve as a powerful source of inspiration for their peers. By witnessing the remarkable achievements of their fellow learners, more learners are motivated to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) fields, which will be beneficial to South Africa.”
Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “STEM education empowers individuals to think critically, solve problems creatively, and adapt to a changing landscape of technology. It prepares our youth to become leaders in industries shaping the future, from artificial intelligence to renewable energy. Eskom Expo regional science fairs are crucial in advancing STEM education by showcasing grassroots innovations, scientific research and innovative solutions. These events inspire curiosity from the learners and spark an interest in STEM careers, which are in big demand in our country, as part of the National Development Plan 2030. As we embrace the opportunities of the digital age, investing in STEM education and supporting expos is not just a strategic choice but a moral imperative. It ensures that our nation remains at the forefront of innovation, competitiveness, and global leadership.”
