The North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus buzzed with excitement as young scientists from the Dr Kenneth Kaunda gathered to showcase their scientific prowess at this year’s Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair.
A total of 84 budding young scientists from the region presented 61 research projects at the event, which took place on 2 August 2024. The projects on display were evaluated by 32 judges, which included educators, specialists, academics, and dedicated Eskom Expo supporters. The most popular categories were Engineering, Energy, Environmental Science, Computer Science and Software Development, and Social Sciences.
Eskom Expo’s Dr Kenneth Kaunda Regional Science Fair Director, Lydia Maputle said, “The 2024 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Regional Science Fair has been a testament to the extraordinary talent and dedication of our young scientists. This year marks a milestone anniversary, and we are incredibly proud of the achievements showcased. The level of innovation and the commitment to addressing real-world issues through science and technology have been truly inspiring. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, judges, and organisers who made this event a resounding success.”
The top young scientists were honoured with the prestigious Eskom Special Awards at the region’s awards ceremony. The award recipients, who received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by Eskom, included:
- Best female: Lamees Rassulmia, Grade 10 at The High School for Girls Potchefstroom
- Best innovation: Melokuhle Ndimande and Phetogo Bele, Grade 10 at The High School for Girls Potchefstroom
- Best energy project: Rievkah Boardman, Grade 9 at The High School for Girls Potchefstroom
- Best development project: Lefa Leburu and Sahara Onito, Grade 7 at Klerksdorp Primary School
Other special prizes were also awarded, including:
- Best primary school projects: Esme Cronje from Noordvaal Primary School; Lefa Leburu from Klerksdorp Primary School; and Sahara Onito from Klerksdorp Primary School.
- Best secondary school project: Lamees Rassulmia from The High School for Girls Potchefstroom
- Primary school with the most projects: Klerksdorp Primary School
- Secondary school with the most projects: The High School for Girls Potchefstroom
Additionally, a total of seven highly coveted Gold medals were awarded at the awards ceremony, along with nine Silver medals and 30 Bronze medals.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said, “The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists exemplifies Eskom’s dedication to develop the next generation of skilled science and engineering professionals, not only in South Africa, but across the entire continent.
