A total of 119 budding young scientists in and around the Umkhanyakude District seized the opportunity to showcase their scientific genius at this year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists KwaZulu-Natal Far North Regional Science.
This fair, the second of two in the region, took place at the Sisizakele Special School Hall in Jozini on 30 July 2024. The 96 projects, some group projects, on display were evaluated by 52 judges, which included educators, specialists, academics, and dedicated Eskom Expo supporters.
Eskom Expo’s KZN Far North Regional Science Fair Director, Sibiya Silungile said, “I wish to congratulate all the young scientists who exhibited their research projects, while commending the Regional Expo Committee members, District Expo Coordinators, mentor teachers, school principals, parents, circuit and district officials, along with the Provincial Expo Coordinator, and the National Expo Office for the unwavering support.”
The top young scientists were honoured with the prestigious Eskom Special Awards at the region’s awards ceremony. The award recipients, who received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by Eskom, included:
- Best female: Olwethu Kunene, Grade 12 at Nkodibe High School
- Best innovation: Nokukhanya Gumede, Grade 7 at Khulangolwazi Primary School
- Best energy project: John Hamilton, Grade 7 at Khethani Christian School
- Best development project: Anele Nyawo, Grade 8 at Mbopha High School
Other special prizes were awarded, including the Special Primary School Projects award, which went to Anelisiwe Mnguni, a Grade 7 learner at Khulangolwazi, and Victor Chigwede, a Grade 7 learner at Sodwana Private School. Additionally, the Special Secondary School Projects award was presented to Ndumiso Dlangalala, a Grade 10 learner at Joyhouse School, and Banele Madiba, a Grade 12 learner at Mtubatuba School.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said, “We at the Eskom Development Foundation are ecstatic to see that learners are actively taking action to address the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations (UN), which was a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for us all. Regional science fairs not only provide a platform for young scientists to display their scientific ability, but also serve as a powerful source of inspiration for their peers. By witnessing the remarkable achievements of their fellow learners, more learners are motivated to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) fields, which will be beneficial to South Africa.”
