Social Sciences, Engineering, and Environmental Studies were among the standout categories at the Eskom Expo Eden Karoo Regional Science Fair, where young scientists presented their innovative research projects.
The regional science fair held at the George Civic Centre on 16 August featured 49 projects showcased by 74 young scientists in Grades 4–12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) NC(V) Level 2 to NC(V) Level 4 students. These learners progressed in their Expo journeys after taking part in various activities throughout the year, including workshops and District Expos.
The most popular category at this year’s fair was Social Sciences, with 17 entries, followed by strong participation in Engineering (16) and Environmental Studies (eight).
Eskom Expo’s Western Cape Provincial Coordinator, Lyndon Manas said: “The Eden Karoo Regional Committee extends its heartfelt congratulations to all finalists who participated in the regional science fair (RSF). Learners displayed months of dedication through innovative projects that demonstrated their passion for science and problem-solving. Beyond awards, the fair provided a platform to inspire new ideas, build connections, and encourage collaboration. We are deeply grateful to our title sponsor Eskom, our partners, sponsors, volunteers, judges, and committee members for their invaluable support. To the schools, teachers, mentors, and parents who guided these young scientists, we thank you for nurturing their potential and helping to spark new opportunities for the future.”
During the awards ceremony, learners were recognised for excellence in research and innovation. A total of 12 Gold medals, five Silver medals, and 16 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards from Eskom. The award recipients, who received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by Eskom, are as follows:
- Best Female: Izelke Conradie and Sarai Roos, Grade 10 at Punt High School
- Best Innovation: Heinrich Conradie, Grade 11 at Outeniqua High School
- Best Energy Project: Joël Oosthuizen and Jonathan Van Wyk, Grade 11 at Punt High School
- Best Development Project: Linathi Koyana, Grade 9 at Murray High School
The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “One of the most powerful aspects of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is its deliberate focus on inclusion and transformation. By targeting previously disadvantaged individuals (PDIs) and placing a strong emphasis on girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI), the Expo ensures that access to quality scientific education and innovation opportunities is extended to learners who have historically been excluded from such platforms. This not only builds equity within the education system but also creates a more diverse and representative pool of future scientists and engineers. Eskom is proud to support a programme that actively breaks down barriers and opens doors for every child, regardless of background or gender, to thrive in STEMI fields.”

- Computer science and software development (Best Senior): Somila Sihele, Grade 10 at Murray High School
- Earth Sciences (Best Senior): Izelke Conradie and Sarai Roos, Grade 10 at Punt High School
- Earth Sciences (Best Junior): Reneshmee Raymond and Ke-ano Jacobs, Grade 6 at De Villiers Primary School
- Energy (Best Senior): Joel Oosthuizen and Jonathan van Wyk, Grade 11 at Punt High School
- Engineering (Best Senior): Heinrich Conradie, Grade 11 at Outeniqua High School
- Engineering (Best Junior): Jakequinn Saayman and Mikash Maritz, Grade 7 at Kretzenshoop Primary School
- Environmental Sciences (Best Senior): Thandile Mqeke, Grade 11 at Concordia High School
- Environmental Sciences (Best Junior): Ivile Ncanywa, Grade 9 at Murray High School
- Social Sciences (Best Senior): Haily Ruth Petersen, Grade 11 at Aurial College
- Social Sciences (Best Junior): Mqweba Khalima and Mnyanda Iminathi, Grade 7 at Delville Park Primary School
Additionally, the SA Quantum Technology Initiative at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) awarded a Raspberry Pi to James Julies, Grade 11 at Morester Secondary School, while Rondebult awarded cash prizes to the following young scientists:
- Best Senior Male: Heinrich Conradie, Grade 11 at Outeniqua High School
- Best Senior Female: Izelke Conradie & Sarai Roos, Grade 10 at Punt High School
- Best Junior Male: Aedan Rischmuller, Grade 9 at Still Bay Homeschool
