Young scientists from across the KwaZulu-Natal Far North (Zululand) region showcased innovative research projects across the various Eskom Expo categories, demonstrating creativity, critical thinking and practical solutions to real-world challenges affecting their communities and South Africa.
Hosted at the Ulundi Multipurpose Hall on 28 July 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 102 projects, including group projects, presented by 158 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors, and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. Engineering was the most popular category with 39 entries, followed by Social Sciences (22), while Agricultural Sciences, Biomedical and Medical Sciences, and Mathematics each attracted seven entries.
Eskom Expo KwaZulu-Natal Far North Regional Science Fair Director, Silungile Sibiya, said: “The Regional Science Fair in Zululand was a great success, with so many young scientists showcasing innovative research projects. This achievement was made possible by the dedication of our volunteers, Regional Science Fair committee members, Eskom Expo Provincial and National Office staff, Department of Education officials, participating schools, mentor teachers and valued stakeholders. We are encouraged by the growth of the programme, with nine new schools participating this year, while the strong participation from primary schools is helping to develop an interest in STEM from an early age. Congratulations to all the young scientists and thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s event.”
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research, innovation, and presentation. A total of four Gold medals, 28 Silver medals and 37 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. The award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “Investing in STEM education is an investment in South Africa’s future. Through the Eskom Development Foundation’s continued investment and support in Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, we are nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers, researchers, and innovators. This year’s Regional Science Fairs showcased the remarkable innovation, critical thinking and scientific excellence of our young people, whose research demonstrates the potential to transform bold ideas into practical solutions that address real-world challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future. We congratulate every learner who participated and commend their dedication and outstanding achievements.”
Other special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding participation and achievement throughout the Eskom Expo programme. King Bhekuzulu High School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while Zwelonke High School was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair, reflecting both schools’ outstanding commitment to scientific research, innovation and learner participation.
