Strong female participation and high-quality research characterised the Eskom Expo Dr Kenneth Kaunda Regional Science Fair, where girls significantly outnumbered boys as young scientists from across the region demonstrated creativity, scientific thinking and a commitment to developing meaningful solutions to real-world challenges.
Hosted at the North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus on 21 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 65 research projects, including group projects, presented by 95 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 39 entries, followed by Earth Sciences and Agricultural Sciences which attracted 12 entries each.
Eskom Expo’s North West Provincial Coordinator, Mmabatho Moloedi, said: “The regional event was particularly encouraging, not only because of the quality of research presented, but also because of the strong participation by girls. Of the participants, 61 were girls compared with 28 boys, demonstrating encouraging female representation in science and research within the region. Our young scientists presented projects that reflected impressive scientific thinking, creativity and a genuine commitment to investigating problems and developing meaningful solutions. We congratulate every learner who participated and thank our title sponsor, Eskom, for continuing to invest in young scientific talent. Our sincere appreciation also goes to North-West University for hosting the event, as well as our schools, educators, parents, judges, mentors, volunteers, committee members, partners and sponsors whose collective support made the Regional Science Fair a success.”
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 13 Gold medals, 16 Silver medals and 13 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “The success of the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fairs reflects the power of strong partnerships and collaboration. Several Best in Category Awards were presented to young scientists in recognition of outstanding achievement:
- Animal Sciences: Julie Neuwman (The High School for Girls Potchefstroom)
- Biomedical and Medical Sciences: Shreya Zacaria (The High School for Girls Potchefstroom)
- Computer Sciences and Software Development: Rumaysah Nakooda (Qurtuba Online Academy)
- Energy: Rievkah Boardman (The High School for Girls Potchefstroom)
- Earth Sciences: Amen Achiso and Reatlegile Mooketsi (Manzilpark Primary School)
- Plant Sciences: Aalimah Adeleke (The High School for Girls Potchefstroom)
- Social Sciences: Mosimanegape Mohlope and Tshiamo Moatlhodi (Boitshoko Secondary School)
Several school awards were also presented in recognition of outstanding participation and performance. Tiragalo Secondary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while The High School for Girls Potchefstroom was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair.
Additionally, several additional awards were presented in recognition of outstanding projects and the dedication of educators:
- Best Primary Project: Amen Achiso and Reatlegile Mooketsi (Manzilpark Primary School)
- Best Secondary Project: Shreya Zacaria (The High School for Girls Potchefstroom)
- Most Dedicated Male Teacher: Walter do Carmo (Klerksdorp Primary School)
- Most Dedicated Female Teacher: Mmathapelo Koloko (Tiragalo Secondary School)
Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “Heartfelt thanks to the regional committee and the many volunteers who gave their time and expertise to the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair. Your mentorship, judging and behind-the-scenes coordination created a welcoming environment where young scientists could test ideas, learn and grow confidence.
