The Eskom Expo Ekurhuleni Regional Science Fair celebrated the creativity, determination and scientific ability of young scientists who progressed through the various stages of the programme, supported along the way by dedicated educators, mentors, schools and partners.
Hosted at Hoërskool Jeugland in Kempton Park on 15 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 144 research projects, including group projects, presented by 186 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 52 entries, followed by Energy (17) and Social Sciences (16).
Eskom Expo Ekurhuleni Regional Science Fair Director, Palesa Selepe, expressed her delight to celebrate the outstanding success of this year’s Regional Science Fair, saying the event has once again showcased the brilliance, creativity and determination of the young scientists.
“I am deeply proud of every participant who has reached this stage. Your innovation and perseverance are truly inspiring. My sincere gratitude goes to all mentors, teachers and schools whose encouragement and guidance have been the backbone of our learners’ journey. Your dedication ensures that science education continues to thrive and empower future leaders. We also extend heartfelt thanks to the schools and foundations that generously hosted our District Expos: Tersia King Learning Academy, Sunward Park High School, Galway Primary School, Laerskool Leondale Parallel Medium and YAWA Foundation. Your support and hospitality have been instrumental in creating spaces where learners can shine. Together, we are building not only a culture of scientific excellence but also one of collaboration, accountability and shared achievement,” said Selepe.
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 24 Gold medals, 41 Silver medals and 54 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “For many learners, the Regional Science Fairs are an important milestone on the journey to the Eskom Expo International Science Fair and other prestigious global platforms where South African talent is recognised and celebrated. Through Eskom’s support of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, these young scientists gain access to mentorship, recognition and opportunities that can shape their academic and career aspirations. We congratulate every learner who participated and wish those advancing to the Eskom Expo International Science Fair every success as they continue to represent their regions and South Africa with distinction.”
School awards were also presented in recognition of outstanding participation and performance. Daleview Primary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while St Declan’s School for Boys was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair.
Additionally, several special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding achievement:
- Best Chemistry and Biochemistry Project (Primary School): Karabo Mabitsela (Laerskool Leondale Parallel Medium School)
- Best Chemistry and Biochemistry Project (Secondary School): Akhanya Lingani (Boitumelong Senior Secondary School)
- Best Biomedical and Medical Sciences Project (Primary School): Ndondo Muleya (Westside Primary School)
- Best Biomedical and Medical Sciences Project (Secondary School): Angel Msiska (Hoërskool Jeugland)
- Best Environmental Studies Project (Primary School): Kabo-Entle Moloi and Washu Mulovhedzi (Freeway Park Primary School)
- Best Environmental Studies Project (Secondary School): Relebogile Rapulana (Hoërskool Jeugland)
- Champion Teacher of the Year: Melusi Cele (St Declan’s School for Boys)
