From engineering solutions to research exploring social and technological challenges, young scientists brought an impressive mix of ideas to the Eskom Expo East London Regional Science Fair, where innovative projects were presented and one learner walked away with a Rhodes University Faculty of Science bursary.
Hosted at the Walter Sisulu University’s Potsdam Campus on 15 August 2026, the fair saw an outstanding young scientist awarded a prestigious Rhodes University Faculty of Science bursary, valued at R75,000, covering the first year of any degree within the Faculty of Science at Rhodes University. The bursary was presented to Milani Mjiji, a Grade 11 learner at Port Rex Technical High School.
The fair featured 90 projects, including group projects, presented by 129 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 39 entries, followed by Social Sciences (13) and Computer Sciences and Software Development (eight).
Eskom Expo’s Eastern Cape Provincial Coordinator, Saskia Ess, said: “The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists East London Regional Science Fair was a great success, showcasing the remarkable effort, passion and dedication of the learners who participated. The variety and quality of the projects reflected the commitment of these young scientists to exploring ideas, solving problems and developing their understanding of the world around them. The enthusiasm and potential demonstrated throughout the fair provided an inspiring glimpse of the talent within the region and the opportunities for continued growth, innovation and positive development in East London. The expo was a celebration of the curiosity, determination and potential of the region’s young people and their ability to contribute meaningfully to its future.”
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of five Gold medals, 15 Silver medals and 26 Bronze medals were awarded.
