Young scientists from schools across Ngaka Modiri Molema showcased their ideas and research at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair, demonstrating the impact that strong partnerships, academic support and community investment can have in developing young scientific talent.
Hosted at the Signal Community Hall in Mahikeng on 14 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 133 projects, including group projects, presented by 152 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 42 entries, followed by Energy (20) and Biomedical and Medical Sciences (19).
Eskom Expo’s North West Provincial Coordinator, Mmabatho Moloedi, said the Ngaka Modiri Molema Regional Science Fair was another successful celebration of innovation and young scientific talent, bringing together learners from schools across the region to proudly showcase their research.
“This success demonstrated what can be achieved when a community comes together to invest in and support young minds. We extend our sincere appreciation to academics from North-West University and Unisa, our partners, sponsors, educators, judges, volunteers and everyone who contributed to the event. Most importantly, congratulations to every young scientist who participated and brought their ideas, enthusiasm and hard work to the Regional Science Fair. Ngaka Modiri Molema has once again delivered an event we can all be proud of,” said Moloedi.
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of six Gold medals, 18 Silver medals and 35 Bronze medals were awarded.
