Four decades of discovery celebrated at Eskom Expo Welkom Regional Science Fair

A 40-year legacy of discovering and developing young scientific talent was celebrated at the Eskom Expo Welkom Regional Science Fair, marking four decades since the region began providing learners with a platform to question, investigate and turn their ideas into scientific research.

Hosted at Central University of Technology (CUT), Welkom on 15 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 129 projects, including group projects, presented by 157 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Social Sciences, which attracted 33 entries, followed by Engineering (30) and Plant Sciences (19).

Eskom Expo’s Welkom Regional Science Fair Director, Anina Nel, said: “What you do in life is your history, but what you set in motion and keep in motion is your legacy. The Welkom Region of the Expo for Young Scientists started in 1986 with three people who had a vision and has grown into a vibrant platform that inspires curiosity, innovation and scientific excellence. This remarkable journey reflects not only the growth of our region, but also the generations of young scientists whose lives have been changed and who have dared to ask questions, explore possibilities and communicate solutions to shape a brighter future through science. As we celebrate 40 years, we celebrate a legacy of passion, perseverance and progress.”

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 21 Gold medals, 19 Silver medals and 36 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “Expanding equitable access to quality STEM opportunities remains a key priority for the Eskom Development Foundation. Through Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, we are empowering learners, particularly those from previously disadvantaged communities, to participate, excel and realise their full potential. The diversity and quality of projects showcased at this year’s Regional Science Fairs reflect the exceptional talent that exists across South Africa. We congratulate every participating learner on their achievement and wish those advancing to the next stage every success as they continue their scientific journey and represent their regions with pride.”

A Special Recognition Award was presented to Bonolo Ntsau from Brebner High School, who received the Matsheliso Science Institute (MSI)–Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) Young Science Researcher Recognition Award for the Social Sciences category. The recognition package included educational and research resources. Ntsau was also selected as an MSI delegate to attend the Science Forum South Africa (SFSA) in December 2026, and to participate in an MSI Educational Science & Research Camp in Cape Town in December 2026.

Additionally, several school awards were presented in recognition of outstanding participation and performance. Welkom High School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while St Andrew’s School Welkom was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair. Philip Bryssau from Naudeville Primary School received the Most Excellent Junior Project Award, while Helené Fourie from Trio High School received the Most Excellent Senior Project Award.

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “We extend gratitude to our title sponsor, Eskom, and to all sponsors whose generous support made the regional science fair possible. This funding helps grow the official gateway for school‑level innovation, delivered in partnership with the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. The growing number of participating schools and female learners demonstrates the success of this initiative, while judges noted a marked improvement in project quality. Thank you to the regional committee and the large number of dedicated volunteers who gave time and expertise to guide learners and judge the projects.
