Kimberley young scientists turn questions into research at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair

Curiosity was transformed into meaningful research at the Eskom Expo Kimberley Regional Science Fair, where young scientists confidently shared their investigations, ideas and solutions, demonstrating the value of giving learners a platform to question, explore and learn through science.

Hosted at the Sol Plaatje University Multipurpose Hall on 15 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 120 research projects, including group projects, presented by 162 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

Eskom Expo Northern Cape Provincial Coordinator, Katlego Tsogang, said this year’s regional event reflected the passion, curiosity and hard work of our young scientists.

“We are especially encouraged by the growth in participation, which shows that more learners are becoming interested in science and are being supported to turn their ideas and questions into meaningful research projects. While we celebrate the many medals and awards, the real achievement lies in every learner who stood proudly beside their project and shared their work,” said Tsogang.

“A particularly special moment was recognising Ms Denise Schemel, Deputy Regional Science Fair Director and Chief Judge, with a Long Service Recognition Award and Mentor Excellence Award ahead of her relocation to Australia. Denise’s contribution over the years has extended far beyond judging and organising fairs, as she has encouraged learners, supported educators and generously shared her knowledge and experience. We also congratulate our award-winning schools and extend our sincere appreciation to our sponsors, schools, educators, parents, judges, volunteers and partners for their continued support. Most importantly, we celebrate our young scientists for having the courage to ask questions, explore ideas and put their research forward,” she added.

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 32 Gold medals, 23 Silver medals and 60 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “At Eskom, we recognise that sustained investment in STEM education is essential to building South Africa’s future skills pipeline. Through our support of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, we are nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators who will drive economic growth and sustainable development. We were encouraged by the outstanding research and innovation showcased at this year’s Regional Science Fairs reflect the exceptional talent and potential of our young people. We congratulate every learner who participated.”

School awards were presented in recognition of outstanding participation and performance. St Patrick’s CBC received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while De Aar High School was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair.

Additional awards presented by Sol Plaatje University (SPU), with winners receiving vouchers included:

  • Best Young Scientist Award: Tshegofatso Mackenzie (Vooruitsig Primary School)
  • Best Problem-Solving Project: Dane Swanevelder (Douglas Combined School)

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “We applaud every participant at the Regional Science Fair for showcasing ingenuity, perseverance, and scientific thinking. These regional science fairs across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly implemented with the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. It is inspiring to see more schools participating in Expo activities and an increase in female learners, expanding access and representation in previously disadvantaged communities. The overall quality of projects has improved noticeably, reflecting stronger mentorship and improved access to Expo resources. Sincere gratitude goes to the regional committee and the numerous volunteers whose time and expertise built this platform, and to Eskom as title sponsor alongside other generous partners. Best wishes to those advancing to the International Science Fair.”
