Young scientists in the Ehlanzeni region seized the opportunity to exhibit their engineering and scientific investigative skills at this year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Ehlanzeni Regional Science Fair.
A total of 266 budding young scientists from the region presented 200 research projects at the event, which took place at Hoërskool Nelspruit on 17 August 2024.The projects on display were evaluated by 76 judges, which included educators, specialists, academics, and dedicated Eskom Expo supporters.
This regional science fair was one of 38 regional science fairs planned in all provinces across South Africa. The most popular categories at the fair were Engineering, Energy, Biomedical and Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences.
Eskom Expo’s Mpumalanga Provincial Coordinator, Innocent Marume, commended the Regional Committee and the invaluable contributions of all the volunteers. “I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the participants, teachers, parents, and our title sponsor, Eskom, for making this event a reality. A special thank you goes to Hoërskool Nelspruit for generously providing the venue for the event.”
The top young scientists were honoured with the prestigious Eskom Special Awards at the region’s awards ceremony. The award recipients, who received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by Eskom, included:
- Best female: Sinethemba Mabuza, Grade 9 at MC Zitha Secondary
- Best innovation: Fortunate Dlamini and lucky Nkosi, Grade 10 at Nkomazi Secondary School
- Best energy project: Lihle Mhlongo, Grade 5 at Little Angel Primary School
- Best development project: Thani Thabiso, Grade 10 at Suikerland Secondary School
The top achievers in the respective 13 Expo categories were honoured with Category Awards. These included:
- Agricultural Sciences and Plant Sciences: Mahlalela Hazel
- Biomedical and Medical Sciences; and Chemistry and Biochemistry: Providence Rapinga
- Engineering and Computer Sciences: Firoz Dada Mohammed
- Energy: Noah Saldanha and Amukelani Mkhatshwa
- Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies: Diyaana Nomani and Danyaal Nomani
- Mathematics: Itumeleng Fundama
- Social Sciences: Sivile Nkosi
