Engineering leads the way at Eskom Expo North Coast KZN Regional Science Fair

A strong showing in Engineering defined this year’s Eskom Expo North Coast KwaZulu-Natal Regional Science Fair, with the category attracting the most entries as young scientists explored ideas and solutions across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.

Hosted at the Kingfisher Hall, Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation (ZCBF), Richards Bay on 4 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 203 projects, including group projects, presented by 282 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 61 entries, followed by Social Sciences (51), Environmental Studies (17 and Computer Sciences and Software Development (15).

Eskom Expo’s KwaZulu-Natal North Coast Regional Science Fair Director, Amoret Conradie Beer, said the event was a great success and showcased the creativity, dedication and innovative thinking of the region’s young scientists.

“The quality and diversity of the projects presented across categories such as Engineering, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies and Computer Sciences demonstrated the learners’ enthusiasm for using research to explore real-world challenges. We are incredibly proud of all our participants and congratulate our medal and special award recipients. We also thank our dedicated judges, partners, guest speakers, committee members, educators, parents and volunteers for their invaluable contribution to the event. It was also an honour to recognise individuals who have dedicated more than 10 years to Eskom Expo through our Long Service Awards. Most importantly, congratulations to every young scientist who participated and contributed to another successful Regional Science Fair,” said Conradie Beer.

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 25 Gold medals, 29 Silver medals and 30 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “The Regional Science Fairs provided an important platform for learners to showcase research that addresses the needs and challenges of their communities. Through its support of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, the Eskom Development Foundation is fostering scientific inquiry, innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving among South Africa’s youth. We commend every participating learner for the passion, creativity and commitment demonstrated throughout their research journey.”

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “We applaud every participant at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair for showcasing ingenuity, perseverance, and scientific thinking. These regional science fairs across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly implemented with the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. It is inspiring to see more schools participating in Expo activities and an increase in female learners, expanding access and representation in previously disadvantaged communities. The overall quality of projects has improved noticeably, reflecting stronger mentorship and improved access to Expo resources.
