Mthatha young scientists awarded at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair

Scientific excellence was rewarded at the Eskom Expo Mthatha Regional Science Fair, where a young scientist received a prestigious Rhodes University Faculty of Science bursary alongside learners from across the region who showcased innovative research and solutions to real-world challenges.

Held at Walter Sisulu University’s Nelson Mandela Drive Campus on 7 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair saw an outstanding young scientist awarded a prestigious Rhodes University Faculty of Science bursary, valued at R75,000, covering the first year of any degree within the Faculty of Science at Rhodes University. The bursary was presented to Daniel Owusu-Ansah, a Grade 12 learner at Umtata High School.

The fair featured 109 research projects, including group projects, presented by 152 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 62 entries, followed by Social Sciences (11), and Computer Sciences and Software Development (10).

Eskom Expo’s Eastern Cape Provincial Coordinator, Saskia Ess, said: “The event was a great success, showcasing the energy, effort and passion of learners from across the region. Despite differences in available resources and the distances many participants travelled to attend the fair, the enthusiasm and commitment to science and innovation were evident throughout the day. The projects reflected a strong understanding of the needs and challenges within their communities, with many presenting practical, cost-effective solutions aimed at making a positive difference and contributing to the upliftment of the Mthatha region. The quality and dedication demonstrated by the participants upheld the high standard of scientific inquiry and innovation encouraged by Eskom Expo.”

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 15 Gold medals, 27 Silver medals and 38 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “The Regional Science Fairs provided an important platform for learners to showcase research that addresses the needs and challenges of their communities. Through its support of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, the Eskom Development Foundation is fostering scientific inquiry, innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving among South Africa’s youth. We commend every participating learner for the passion, creativity and commitment demonstrated throughout their research journey.”

Several special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding achievement. Umtata High School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while Tholang Secondary School was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair, reflecting both schools’ commitment to scientific research, innovation and learner participation.

These regional science fairs across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly implemented with the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. It is inspiring to see more schools participating in Expo activities and an increase in female learners, expanding access and representation in previously disadvantaged communities. The overall quality of projects has improved noticeably, reflecting stronger mentorship and improved access to Expo resources.
