Waterberg young scientists engineer solutions to real-world challenges

Engineering innovation took centre stage at the Eskom Expo Waterberg Regional Science Fair, emerging as the leading category as young scientists from across the region presented research projects aimed at addressing real-world challenges through practical and creative solutions.

Hosted at the Mokopane EMPC Hall on 6 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 112 projects, including group projects, presented by 146 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 65 entries, followed by Social Sciences with 19 entries.

Eskom Expo Waterberg Regional Science Fair Director, Dibata Lephondo said: “The event showcased the creativity and determination of our young scientists, with many projects focusing on challenges that directly affect their local communities. Learners explored solutions in areas such as environmental sustainability, health, agriculture, technology and energy, demonstrating how scientific research can be applied to issues they encounter in their everyday lives. We are proud of every learner who participated and grateful to our title sponsor, Eskom, as well as our educators, judges, schools, parents, volunteers, partners and committee members for their continued support in developing young scientific talent in the Waterberg region.”

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 17 Gold medals, 36 Silver medals and 50 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “The success of the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fairs reflects the power of strong partnerships and collaboration. We sincerely thank educators, mentors, judges, government departments, higher education institutions, industry partners and volunteers for creating an environment in which young scientists can thrive. Together, we are strengthening South Africa’s STEM ecosystem and inspiring the next generation of innovators. We also commend every participating learner for their commitment, perseverance and enthusiasm. The quality, diversity and originality of this year’s projects are a testament to the exceptional talent and potential of South Africa’s youth.”

Ramogabudi Senior Secondary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while Ebenezer High School received the award for the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair, recognising the school’s strong participation in the Eskom Expo programme.

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “We applaud every participant at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair for showcasing ingenuity, perseverance, and scientific thinking. These regional science fairs across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly implemented with the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. It is inspiring to see more schools participating in Expo activities and an increase in female learners, expanding access and representation in previously disadvantaged communities. The overall quality of projects has improved noticeably, reflecting stronger mentorship and improved access to Expo resources.
