Emerging scientific talent was on display at the Eskom Expo West Coast Regional Science Fair, where young scientists presented innovative research projects that showcased originality, critical thinking and the potential of science to improve lives and strengthen communities.
Held at White City Multipurpose Centre in Saldanha on 6 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 104 research projects, including group projects, presented by 146 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Social Sciences, which attracted 24 entries, followed by Engineering (17) and Environmental Studies (13).
Eskom Expo’s West Coast Regional Science Fair Director, Ursula Boys, said the event was a resounding success, showcasing outstanding research projects that demonstrated exceptional creativity, critical thinking and innovation.“We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, whose overwhelming generosity provided an array of prizes that enriched the experience for our participants. The atmosphere throughout the event was inspiring, with learners expressing great enthusiasm and already looking forward to participating in 2027. During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 10 Gold medals, 22 Silver medals and 47 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “The Regional Science Fairs provided an important platform for learners to showcase research that addresses the needs and challenges of their communities. Through its support of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, the Eskom Development Foundation is fostering scientific inquiry, innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving among South Africa’s youth. We commend every participating learner for the passion, creativity and commitment demonstrated throughout their research journey.”
Several special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding achievement across a range of scientific disciplines, including:

- Best Junior Biomedical and Medical Sciences Project: Marize Labuschagne (Vredendal High School) and Mieke Bezuidenhout (Vredenburg High School)
- Best Senior Biomedical and Medical Sciences Project: Lia Bishop (Vredenburg High School)
- Best Junior Chemistry and Biochemistry Project: Jesmine Linnert (Jurie Hayes Primary School)
- Best Junior Computer Sciences and Software Development Project: Mikaeel Pietersen (Liebenberg Primary School)
- Best Junior Earth Sciences Project: Ile de Beer (Hopefield High School)
- Best Senior Energy Project: Andrew de Boer (Curro Langebaan)
- Best Senior Engineering Project: Carel van Niekerk (Piketberg High School)
- Best Junior Environmental Studies Project: Ovayo Somhlahlo (Vredenburg High School)
- Best Junior Plant Sciences Project: Riaz Africa (Vredenburg High School)
- Best Junior Social Sciences Project: Mikayla Makau (Saldanha Primary School)
Additional special prizes were also awarded for exceptional overall performance.

- Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) South African Quantum Technology Initiative Award (tablet computer): Jose Adams (St Andrews Primary School)
Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “We applaud every participant at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair for showcasing ingenuity, perseverance, and scientific thinking. These regional science fairs across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly implemented with the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation.
