The Eskom Expo Namakwa (Calvinia) Regional Science Fair celebrated the continued growth of scientific research and innovation in the region, as young scientists showcased innovative projects reflecting creativity, critical thinking and practical solutions to real-world challenges.
Hosted at Calvinia Primary School on 6 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 46 research projects, including group projects, presented by 62 learners in Grades 4 to 12. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Social Sciences, which attracted 17 entries, followed by Engineering (10), while Environmental Studies and Plant Sciences which attracted six entries each.
Eskom Expo Northern Cape Provincial Coordinator, Katlego Tsogang, said this year’s Regional Science Fair marked a significant milestone in the growth of science and innovation in the region, with a steady increase in participation in the region.
“Congratulations to every learner who participated for their dedication, innovation and willingness to explore solutions to real-world challenges. We encourage more schools, educators and learners across Namakwa to become part of the Eskom Expo journey and help us continue growing a culture of scientific excellence and innovation in our communities,” said Tsogang.
“A special highlight of the event was the presentation of the Mentor Excellence Award, awarded on merit to Albertus Goosen, Acting Regional Science Fair Director, in recognition of his exceptional mentorship and unwavering commitment to developing young scientists in the Namakwa Region. These achievements would not have been possible without the continued support of our title sponsor, Eskom, together with the Northern Cape Department of Education, our host school, Calvinia Primary School, our educators, parents, volunteers, judges and valued partners who invested their time and expertise in our learners,” she added.
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of 21 Gold medals, 12 Silver medals and 17 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “Investing in STEM education is an investment in South Africa’s future. Several special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding achievement. Calvinia Primary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo and was also recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair, reflecting the school’s outstanding commitment to scientific research, innovation and learner participation.
