Innovation and scientific excellence celebrated at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati

The Eskom Expo Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Regional Science Fair highlighted the remarkable talent of the region’s young scientists, whose innovative research projects reflected scientific curiosity, creativity and a commitment to solving real-world problems.

Hosted at Kismet Community Hall in Vryburg on 31 July 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 93 research projects, including group projects, showcased by 136 qualifying learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 35 entries, followed by Earth Sciences and Agricultural Sciences with 14 each.

Eskom Expo’s North West Provincial Coordinator, Mmabatho Moloedi, said: “It has been a long and rewarding journey of inspiring young scientists across the Dr Ruth Segomotsi District Municipality. For the past decade, I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with incredible young minds, dedicated teachers, and committed committee members. The support from our title sponsor Eskom has made it possible for us to reach schools in the most rural areas of the North West Province. To everyone who has been part of this journey, I thank you. The future of science in our communities is bright because of you.”

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research, innovation and presentation. A total of eight Gold medals, 21 Silver medals and 28 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. The award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “Investing in STEM education is an investment in South Africa’s future. This year’s Regional Science Fairs showcased the remarkable innovation, critical thinking and scientific excellence of our young people, whose research demonstrates the potential to transform bold ideas into practical solutions that address real-world challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future. We congratulate every learner who participated and commend their dedication and outstanding achievements.”

Other special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding participation and achievement throughout the Eskom Expo programme. Thibogang Primary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while Huhudi High School was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair, reflecting both schools’ outstanding commitment to scientific research, innovation and learner participation.
