Vhembe young scientists impress judges with innovative research at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair

The Eskom Expo Vhembe Regional Science Fair showcased the high standard of research produced by the region’s young scientists, with projects demonstrating originality, scientific rigour and practical solutions to challenges facing their communities.

Hosted at Tshivhase Secondary School on 1 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 168 research projects, including group projects, presented by 187 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 82 entries, followed by Energy, Social Sciences, and Computer Sciences and Software Development, which attracted 15 entries each.

Eskom Expo’s Limpopo Provincial Coordinator, Tshego Mahuma, said a standout feature of this year’s Regional Science Fair was the quality and relevance of the projects presented.

“Judges were impressed by the depth of research, the originality of the ideas, and the practical application of scientific principles to real-world challenges. Many learners focused on issues directly affecting their communities, including environmental sustainability, agriculture, public health, renewable energy, water conservation and technological innovation. The projects demonstrated a growing understanding of scientific methodology, with learners showing strong skills in research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation. Thank you to Tshivhase Secondary School for hosting the event, as well as to all the educators, judges, stakeholders and, most importantly, the young scientists who made the event possible.”

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research and innovation. A total of seven Gold medals, 21 Silver medals and 32 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. These award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

Other special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding participation and achievement throughout the Eskom Expo programme. Kutama Secondary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, while St Mary’s Independent School was recognised as the Best Performing School at the Regional Science Fair, reflecting both schools’ outstanding commitment to scientific research, innovation and learner participation.

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “Congratulations to all the young scientists who participated in the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair. These regional events across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly supported by the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. Learners turned curiosity into rigorous inquiry, transforming ideas into experiments that tackle real challenges and spark fresh solutions. Judges reported a marked improvement in project quality, with stronger methods and clearer communication. Heartfelt thanks to the regional committee and the many volunteers for their dedication, and to title sponsor Eskom and our regional partners for their generous support. Best wishes to the finalists advancing to the International Science Fair.”

Parents and teachers are encouraged to attend a Regional Science Fair in their area with their children and learners to experience firsthand the creativity and innovation of South Africa’s young scientists, and to inspire the next generation of researchers to participate in next year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.
