Postmasburg teacher Benita Claassens inspires youth with passion for science and community involvement

With Eskom Expo’s registration day fast approaching on 15 January 2025, an Expo alumna and dedicated teacher from Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, has shared valuable advice to budding researchers who are preparing for their very first science fair.

Benita Claassens, a mentor to young learners, said, “Find a topic that interests you. Ask for help and be open to new ideas and ways of doing research.”

She also emphasised the importance of practical skills and real-world problem-solving. “Learners need to learn practical skills like design and building. Moreover, find practical solutions for the many social problems facing our world today,” she says.

Claassens is making significant strides in her efforts to positively influence her community, and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. Her passion for science and education is evident as she recounts her journey from an enthusiastic learner, to a committed educator.

Claassens’s engagement with science began at a young age. “I attended an Eskom Expo with my parents when I was younger and immediately wanted to join,” she says. “I participated all through my high school career and enjoyed it greatly.” Her consistent involvement in these Expos laid the foundation for her future endeavours.

After a brief hiatus, Claassens rekindled her connection with the Expo. “I only recently became involved with the Expo again when I started working as a teacher,” she says. Her return to the Expo scene has been driven by a desire to give back to the community that shaped her.

Reflecting on her school years, Claassens highlights a pivotal moment, saying, “I had the opportunity to attend the Eskom Expo International Science Fair while in school. It was an amazing experience! I met fabulous people and learned so much that not only improved my own projects, but also prepared me for university.” This exposure was instrumental in her academic and personal development.

Though she is still relatively new to the field of education, Claassens is optimistic about the future. “Our youth is very impressive. They are creative and conscious of the issues we face daily. It gives me a lot of hope for the future.”

When asked where her passion for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) comes from, Claassens said she developed a love of science and nature from her father. “My dad is a great nature enthusiast and farmer. Growing up on a farm sparked a love of learning about nature and solving problems. We often visited science exhibits and museums,” she says.

“I also love traveling in my free time and enjoy photography and building miniature planes,” she says. Claassens’s diverse hobbies reflects her curiosity and creativity – qualities she hopes to instil in her learners. “I love working with young people, and I strive to be a positive influence in the community.”

Claassens’s journey is a shining example of how passion, perseverance, and a commitment to community can inspire and empower the next generation. Her story continues to motivate young minds to explore, innovate, and create a better future.
