Young scientists are empowered at Joburg workshop

Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in the Johannesburg region hosted a workshop for teachers and learners at Jeppe High School for Boys with the aim of enhancing the scientific skills of promising young researchers.

About 173 learners in grades 6 – 12, from Jeppe Boys, Jeppe Girls, Kensington Secondary, Primrose High, St Andrews School for Girls, Phumula Gardens, Zakarriyya Park, King Edward VIII, St Endas, Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, Parktown High, Curro Academy Savannah, Curro Academy Riverside, Curro Waterfall and Summerhill School attended the workshop.

According to Eskom Expo Johannesburg regional science fair director, Jane Wasonga, the objective of the workshop was to have learners interact with actual researchers in order to inspire them to develop their own scientific ideas, which will then be presented as an Eskom Expo science project in district- and regional expos.

“At the workshop, learners had the opportunity to delve into topics based on the 13 Eskom Expo categories, in order to conduct research, or expand on existing research plans,” said Wasonga. “Some learners had chosen research topics already and required a starting point to kick off their research projects,” she added.

Guest speakers included Akash Makhan from Eskom, Prof Jan Kruger from the Graduate School of Business Leadership and Eskom Expo Gauteng provincial coordinator Raven Motsewabangwe.  They provided practical learning on innovation, science and engineering projects, choosing projects and getting started, the abstract, the scientific method, engineering goals, reporting and developing project posters, which added fun and excitement to the workshop.

Eskom Expo celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and will see more local learners take part in workshops and science camps leading up to the regional science expo.
