Nongoma young scientist inspires with her passion for science and leadership

Melokuhle Khuzwayo, a Grade 12 learner from King Bhekuzulu High School in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, is proving that dedication, curiosity, and compassion can open incredible doors.

As a young scientist and confident public speaker, Khuzwayo’s journey with the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists has not only deepened her love for science, but also inspired those around her.

“I’ve always been passionate about studying, research, and science,” said Khuzwayo (18). “I consider myself a natural-born leader and a confident public speaker who believes in spreading kindness wherever possible.”

Raised in a respectful and supportive family of educated individuals, Khuzwayo added that her upbringing played a major role in shaping her values and ambitions. “Growing up in a home that values education motivated me to always give my best,” she explained. “Even when I faced academic challenges, those experiences helped me grow stronger and more determined.”

Outside of her scientific interests, Khuzwayo enjoys reading and watching documentaries, especially those that explore mysteries. “I love learning about the unknown,” she said. “And I’m also passionate about helping others, which I see as a big part of who I am.”

Her introduction to Eskom Expo came through her twin sister, Simesihle, who participated in 2022. “Watching her work hard and later receive awards was so inspiring,” Khuzwayo recalled. “When she suggested we do a group project together in 2023, I immediately agreed, and that’s how my exciting journey with Eskom Expo began.”

Since then, Khuzwayo’s experience with the Expo has been filled with highlights, one of her favourites being a visit to the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome during the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) 2025. “Exploring the Dome and learning about space was absolutely fascinating,” she said. “It opened my eyes to how vast and amazing the universe is.”

Khuzwayo was one of six young scientists who were awarded full bursaries sponsored by Eskom, which covers full tuition, accommodation, meals, textbooks and a living allowance for studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at accredited South African universities.

Winning an award at the ISF was a defining moment for the young scientist. “It was an incredible and joyful experience; words cannot describe how happy I felt,” she said. “The recognition has opened doors for future opportunities and pushed me to stay focused on achieving excellent matric results.”

Khuzwayo’s passion for science began in Grade 10, when she was first introduced to Physical Sciences, particularly chemistry. “Learning about how substances react, and change was fascinating,” she said. “That’s when I realised science isn’t just about formulas, it’s about understanding how the world works.”

Khuzwayo hopes to inspire other learners to take part in the Eskom Expo and explore their curiosity through research. “My advice to young scientists is simple: no idea is a bad idea,” she said. “Whatever small idea you have, nurture it, ask for help, research it, and start working on it today. Failure doesn’t mean the end; it means you’re trying. Keep pushing forward and never give up before you even begin.”
