Azola Sihlahla from Dulati Combined School in Mzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, has shown that perseverance and passion can turn dreams into reality.
Hailing from the small rural community of Magqagqeni, Sihlahla’s journey to the 45th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) is one marked by determination, mentorship, and a deep love for learning.
“I’ve learned to be resilient,” said Sihlahla. “Coming from a humble background has taught me to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. I’m passionate about learning new things, especially languages, and I enjoy fiddling with electronics.”
Sihlahla’s introduction to the Eskom Expo came in 2022 when his Physical Science teacher, Mr. Magoboti, introduced him to the competition. “Before 2022, I wasn’t aware of the Eskom Expo,” he said. “Mr. Magoboti told me about the opportunity to develop an idea, build a model, and showcase it. That sparked my curiosity, and I decided to participate.”
Although Sihlahla’s first attempt didn’t earn him a spot at the ISF in 2022, he refused to give up. “I didn’t make it to the ISF initially, but I persisted and finally got the chance this year. It was a long journey, but I’m thrilled to have made it,” he said.
The Eskom Expo ISF, held at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park from 6 to 10 October, brought together the brightest young scientists from South Africa and several international delegations. It’s a celebration of innovation, curiosity, and the power of education to transform lives.
Sihlahla was awarded a Highly Commended certificate at the ISF, and was one of eight young scientists who were awarded the Durban University of Technology’s Young Innovator Award. Winners received tablet computers and entry into a 12-month mentorship and incubation support programme valued at R15 000. He was also one of two finalists who were awarded a Siemens Energy Engineering bursary valued at approximately R1.5 million.
For Sihlahla, being among these young innovators was a life-changing experience.
“Winning awards at the ISF was a dream come true. It was heartwarming to see my name among so many talented learners,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the Eskom Expo, particularly the visits to the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and the Wits Anglo-American Digital Dome, which deepened my interest in science. What struck me most was the way people from different regions and backgrounds came together to learn and share knowledge.”
Reflecting on his journey, Sihlahla expressed deep gratitude for his mentor. “I’d like to thank Mr. Magoboti for planting the seed of science in me and for showing me videos and photos of Eskom Expo. He supported and believed in me all the way till today,” he said.
To those preparing for their first science fair, Sihlahla’s message is one of perseverance and faith: “Believe in yourself, pray, and follow your mentors’ guidance. Manage your time well, communicate effectively, and follow the Expo protocols. Most importantly, be sure of what you’re doing, and don’t give up on your dreams.”
