Yu-Yao Chen, a Grade 10 learner at Curro Durbanville High School, has already made her mark on South Africa’s science landscape.
Representing the Stellenbosch Region, Chen (16) was among the standout young scientists honoured at the 45th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF), held from 6 to 10 October 2025 at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Kempton Park, Gauteng.
The Eskom Expo ISF is the country’s premier science fair, bringing together the brightest young minds from across South Africa and abroad to showcase innovative research projects across various science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) fields.
For Chen, earning recognition at this prestigious international stage was both humbling and deeply meaningful. She was the recipient of the Medihelp Special Award, receiving a Tech Bundle valued at R25 000 for excellence in medical innovation, along with a Gold medal.
“Winning the award was humbling and deeply meaningful to me. My goal was never just to win, but to bring fresh ideas to life and learn from others,” she said. “The award became a symbol of encouragement, a simple reminder to keep believing in my work and to continue exploring the unknown with courage.”
Chen’s adventure to the ISF began when she represented her school at the Stellenbosch regional science fair, where her creativity and curiosity stood out. She credits earlier Eskom Expo participants for sparking her interest in science fairs.
“I was inspired by the learners who took part before me,” she said. “Watching their creativity and confidence in presenting their ideas made me want to experience that same journey.”
Beyond her scientific achievements, Chen is a well-rounded learner with a deep appreciation for both nature and the arts.
“I love going on hikes because they allow me to reconnect with nature and feel a sense of calmness,” she said. “Painting, acting, and reading allow me to see life through many different lenses.”
At the ISF, Chen found herself surrounded by like-minded young scientists, forming lasting memories and friendships.
“What I remember most vividly were the people, the laughter, the late-night talks, and the shared excitement over experiments and ideas,” she said. “The mentors and organisers were also wonderfully kind, making the experience not just about learning, but about community and growth.”
Chen’s passion for STEMI stems from her natural curiosity and observant nature.
“As an only child, I often had time to think and notice small details,” she explained. “Curiosity became a constant companion. I believe every child carries that same spark, the desire to understand, to question, and to create. For me, that spark simply never faded.”
To future young scientists, Chen offered heartfelt advice: “Never doubt your ideas, no matter how unusual they may seem. Many of the world’s greatest innovations were once labeled as ‘impossible’. Every great discovery begins with someone brave enough to believe in their own curiosity,” she said.
