Bonginkosi Sithole’s inspiring journey from Nelspruit to national influence highlights his roles as a Senior Employment Specialist, author, leadership coach, and dedicated Eskom Expo contributor, driven by his passion for science, innovation, and education.
Currently employed as a Senior Employment Specialist at the Department of Labour, Sithole has made significant strides in his professional and academic pursuits.
With numerous degrees in employment law, public affairs and administration obtained at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the University of South Africa (Unisa) under his belt, Sithole is an accomplished author, having penned multiple books, including, The survival kit to a successful life and Unpacking Black Tax Affairs: Healing the injuries of black poverty. He is also a renowned leadership and life coach. His diverse expertise and passion for science and innovation have made him a valuable contributor to the Eskom Expo community.
“What initially appealed to me about the Expo was the platform which allowed young school kids to be innovative, and come out with research that can contribute greatly to the world of science and technology. When I joined, I was exposed to multi-talented young stars that taught me a lot,” says Sithole, who participated in Eskom Expo between 2009 and 2013.
The former Sabane Secondary School learner continues, saying, “My project was in the innovation and technology category. It was basically dealing with making a plastic-free environment. I collected different plastic material to create a plastic pavement and bricks. The aim was to deal with plastic pollution, which was a huge problem in our community.”
Fast-forward to 2024, Sithole now holds a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Affairs (Honours), and volunteered in various capacities at Eskom Expo.
“I have judged at the Eskom Expo sub-regional expos; the Regional Science Fairs and the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF); been a convener for various categories for almost eight years. I have also contributed as a committee member in Mpumalanga, while judging in various regions. Eskom Expo always feels like home,” he says.
Beyond his professional achievements, Sithole is passionate about research and bodybuilding. His passion for science was ignited by his former high school teacher, who taught him that solutions come from our surroundings and through the exploration of scientific ideas.
Reflecting on the current state of the Expo, Sithole believes there is room for expansion into broader research areas.
“The Expo has been doing good, but it can expand to research as a whole. This will allow students in social science, including those studying business and economics, to develop scientific models that can shape the world going forward. I believe science is not only limited to natural and physical science, but all the branches work in sync to create well-crafted solutions,” he says.
Sithole’s journey with Eskom Expo exemplifies the power of education, innovation, and dedication. His story serves as an inspiration to young scientists across South Africa, encouraging them to pursue their passions and contribute to the world of science and technology.
Eskom Expo invites professionals such as Teachers, Engineers, Doctors, Veterinarians, Lecturers, Researchers, Scientists, and IT Professionals; along with university students to contribute their academic and specialised expertise by becoming judges at the upcoming Regional Science Fairs planned across South Africa, as well as the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF).
